Running "compact all folders" offline
Use Message Rules to delete old messages, then go to Work Offline, then Compact All Folders. (Return to Online and continue...) -- Gary S. Normally under Windows 98 I leave checked the option to compress in background and Compact messages when there is 20% wasted space. Under that section in Windows XP, however, there are no check items in the Maintenance section. Any ideas why all of a sudden Compacting all folders would just delete over 500 messages

Trent, As long as it is not the very same folder each time that you use the compact all folders command, this does not seem to cause any problems, Use the compact all folders command after each online session, and leave the "compact messages in the background" and "compact messages when there is 20% wasted

OE 5 Cannot Compact All Folders?!
The items are not removed until the folders with deleted items are compacted. You need to compact all your OE folders regularly. This saves disk space and speeds up OE. Close the Folders List, click The X or View | Layout | Unslelect Folders List. File | Folder | Compact All Folders (Or hit Alt + F + F + F) .

Cannot compact all folders

I solved it by choosing file->folder->compact. Now I have problems when sending mails. I got error (warning) without any details. Messages to be send still remain in Outbox folder, but in fact all the new messages have been sent succesfully to receiver?! -Niko.

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage Identities). But here it would be desirable to have a button to compact all folders within a account, because I have ~13 folders.. And a third problem: When sending large attachments, thunderbird sends them to the smtp and then once again to my IMAP Sent folder. Is it possible to have a setting that thunderbird strips

OE is not displaying all messages in Inbox
Compact All Folders compacts all folders, even ones that haven't been touched since the last compaction. As Frank says you can compact single folders with the exception of Folders.dbx. I have many folders, including ones holding copies of all the email messages I've sent for the last 4 years.
