Erratic folder behaviour
I have noticed that the "Compact -> All Folders" option in the "File" = menu(while a great improvement over compacting each folder individually) = seems to have a problem. It tries to compact the Outbox, and then = returns an error. Just an FYI. Anyone else experience this or have a = fix? Thanks!

Create your own local folder(s) and move all the messages you wish to save out of the Inbox and then delete it and follow up with a compact all folders. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer

Anyway, my suggestion is to split it into two options, for the sake of clarity (compact all folders, and compact folder). Under File, it says Compact Therefore it compacts ALL folders at once. Whereas when you right click on a folder it says Compact This Folder -- means it compacts the one you're currently on.

I noticed that it was taking up a LOT of space, so I decided to = manually compact the folders. I went through each folder and deleted a lot of stuff and exited. The space was not freed. I went to a folder so = that the Compact option of Folders would be enabled and selected Compact all Folders. Still not freed.

AFAIK free space in OE is not really "recovered" until you compact all folders. Eg if you move a message from inbox to folder a and then delete it and empty Manually compact all folders to regain space. Make sure you work offline or in offline mode and select the top folder "Outlook Express" before compacting.

So to regain some space I would advise a Compact after one of the other three. For mail, you should occasionally go through your Sent Items and Drafts folder to remove messages that you are no longer interested in keeping. I have a ton of messages in my Inbox and Sent folders. Could that be the cause of the crash when trying to compact. Until this happened I routinely compacted all folders once a week before I ran Norton Utilities to clean things up, correct ActiveX errors, defrag, etc. Orrie.

O no I wait, but the stupid message still appears when I hit alt+f, f, f. verses alt+f, f, c to compact by hand all 101 folders. Then the only difference is Folders.dbx. The only way to compact it is with Alt-F,F,F How big is it? How many news accounts do you have and how many newsgroups does each host?

... the deleted emails from the DBX folder? is that what the compact options does? im not to sure what its for? why did microsoft put the compact option there? file > folder > compact or compact all folders. i am not sure also if there is a software which can open the file. but i sure hope i was a bit of help.

You can mark all messages in a newsgroup as read manually by clicking in the top right-hand pane then pressing Ctrl+A to highlight all messages, then right-click and click Mark as Read. You can compact messages manually by clicking File then Folder then either Compact or Compact All Folders.

If compacting all folders doesn't help, close OE. Search in Explorer for a file named Folders.dbx and delete it. Reopen OE and all should be well...with OE.
